Charlottetown ? Natalie MacMaster took home an award for Instrumental Artist/Group of the Year and her song, ?Get Me Through December? written by Gordie Sampson and Fred Lavery won the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year award. Group of the Year went to the Barra MacNeils.

Newfoundland?s Damhnait Doyle took home four East Coast Music Awards - the most awards to anyone. Lennie Gallant received three awards.

Damhnait Doyle won for Female Artist of the Year, Video of the Year for ?Tattooed,? Pop/Rock Artist/Group of the Year, and Single of the Year for ?Tattooed.?

Lennie Gallant was awarded for Male Artist of the Year, Roots/Traditional Solo Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for ?Lennie Gallant Live.?

The Carson Downey Band won two ECMAs for New Artist/Group of the Year and Blues Artist/Group of the Year.

The Entertainer of the Year award, sponsored by the Guardian, was awarded to The Fables. Great Big Sea had won the award - the only one voted on by the fans - for the past five years, and had not submitted in the category this year.

Comedian Maynard Morrison hosted the pre-broadcast show, and Jonathan Torrens of Jonovision hosted the televised portion of the Gala Awards Show. The show was broadcast live across the country for CBC Television and CBC Radio Two.

The Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award was presented posthumously to Harry Hibbs. The first Newfoundland musician to have a mass following of fans, Harry Hibbs also laid the groundwork for many Newfoundland-style clubs in North America and England.

Anne Murray was presented with the East Coast Music Association?s Board of Directors? Special Achievement Award by Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson. Anne Murray was awarded for having an amazingly successful 30-year career, and for continuing to acknowledge her East Coast roots.

Este Mundo, Sons of Maxwell and Mike O?Neill performed in the Pre-Broadcast Show.

The Gala Awards Show featured a diverse range of music provided by: Holly Cole, Crush, Cory Tetford, the Jive Kings, Shyne Factory, Mir, and Lennie Gallant, and included a special tribute to Anne Murray by Lisa MacDougall, The Ennis Sisters and Damhnait Doyle among others.
